What's Your Process for Surviving Ransomware in Your Backup?

Sep 24, 2018

As we discovered in our previous article, predictions for 2018 from across the industry concur that the number and variation of cyber-attacks are continuing to grow. Experts say that the best defence against ransomware is a clean backup. A number of years ago this may have been the case. However, – threats have evolved.

Throughout 2016 and 2017 we have seen strains such as SAMAS become more prevalent. This variant can delete backup repositories even when those repositories do not allow write-access - leaving you with no backups, anywhere.

A second type of threat – known as the attack-loop, is also becoming more widespread and involves time-delayed undetected malware being embedded into your backup repositories, sometimes for over 12 months. This makes file restoration pointless because as you recover your data, the ransomware re-ignites and re-encrypts the data all over again.

To combat these new and evolving threats, organisations must remain prepared, by asking some key questions.

What processes do you have in place for ensuring backups are recoverable?

Do you have a process in place to protect against attack-loops and strains such as SAMAS?

If you have a current backup process in place, how much time and data would you lose in the event of ransomware infecting the backups?

To find out more about our vSTAX Protect backup solution, and how this can safeguard your business critical data from SAMAS and attack-loop events, call 0151 521 2202 or email info@stack.co.uk.
